quietism

i did sound for theatre play in my undergraduate year.
Play by Samuel Beckett
collaboration with Theatre Design student from CSM.
I recorded all the dialogue separately.
As play is very minimal.
i created whole piece of sound through out the play.
we had many ideas and trials.
At the end it turns out the actors on the stage with queued by lighting and they mimic their lips without making any noise along with their recorded voices from speaker.
i was there press each dialogue every single time to perform.
it was a great fun.

and now i think about this piece,
it was ok performance over all.
and remember the period i put my head into Becketts…

and today i heard someone saying about Beckett and quietism…
I used to love Beckett yes…

When you listen to commercial radio,
there is only one or two atmospheres.
Songs are created for only one or two atmosphere.
They are either celebrating happiness or sadness.
That is it.
That is why I don’t listen to them, simply it is boring. Nothing more.
It is waste of time, unless you need to celebrate someone else’s happiness; Birthday maybe.

And this is the reason I want to create sound piece and listen to.
Every time, you listen to 4’33”, it is different.
It is current, it is changing, never the same.
That is why sound art is existing.
It is floating somehow.
Constantly changing so that hard to memorise. It means it has a pattern that not easily recognised. So that my brain can be free.

I love sound, making sound,  listening sound and singing, playing instruments and composing music are only part of it.

When sound art try to collaborate or it has a visual influence, it starts to fade away.
It no longer has the freedom, the possibility.
The possibility that can be anyone’s or anything’s atmosphere.
It fails to fall special atmosphere and become songs from radio in a gallery.
It is sad.

I love sound.

Sound Architecture

If this is the outcome of sound in Architecture, it somehow is disappointing to me.

Because I have sound art background(have BA in Sonic Arts), I always have this connection of sound then space then Architecture.

The reason I become serious of studying Architecture was sound art.
Or more exactly first start from music to sound art then finally architecture.
I guess I have been trying to find something I can communicate with the world.
Of course the communication include many things.
Most of all I have to like to start and fun enough continue.
Architecture, become something I love but also fun enough to continue and, valuable enough to spent all my time as much as challegable.

In order to make or in order to hold/grab sound to show or perform or make a form of gallery art, it needed space. Not just a simple space but the space I needed for the sound piece.
This leads me to space, acoustics.
Or I already had this thought of sound is space and acoustics, by understanding music as an atmosphere rather than a math or structure or form.

When you(P.Z) mentioned about the without form, I could’ve not agreed more.
It was almost tearful moment when you can share similar thoughts with someone except myself.
It was a very clear moment in my life.

If I come back to this sound building, it was something i would interested when I do sound art, but it is not fully developed sound architecture in my opinion. I don’t have an answer yet but that is why I am still study to find out.
